Complete Powerball Guide

Everything you need to know about US Powerball in one place. From game rules and drawing schedules to prize tiers, the Power Play option, and how to purchase tickets.

What is Powerball?

Powerball is one of the most popular lottery games in the United States, operated by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). Since its first drawing on April 19, 1992, Powerball has built over 30 years of history as one of America's flagship lottery games.

The game works by combining 5 white balls (1-69) with 1 red Powerball (1-26). The odds of hitting the jackpot are approximately 1 in 292,201,338 -- extremely slim, but the jackpots can grow to hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars.

Did you know? The largest Powerball jackpot in history was $2.04 billion, won in November 2022. It holds the world record for the largest single lottery jackpot ever.

Game Rules

Powerball's rules are straightforward. Players select numbers from two separate pools.

Quick Pick

If you find it difficult to choose your own numbers, you can use the Quick Pick option. The computer randomly generates numbers for you. Interestingly, approximately 70-80% of all Powerball winners used Quick Pick to select their numbers.

Drawing Schedule

Powerball drawings are held three times per week.

Drawings take place at the MUSL studio in Tallahassee, Florida, and are broadcast live. Ticket sales typically close 1-2 hours before the drawing (varies by state).

Prize Tiers

Powerball has a total of 9 prize tiers. You can win a prize by matching just the Powerball alone.

Tier Match Prize Odds
1st 5 + Powerball Jackpot (min. $20M) 1 in 292,201,338
2nd 5 $1,000,000 1 in 11,688,054
3rd 4 + Powerball $50,000 1 in 913,129
4th 4 $100 1 in 36,525
5th 3 + Powerball $100 1 in 14,494
6th 3 $7 1 in 580
7th 2 + Powerball $7 1 in 701
8th 1 + Powerball $4 1 in 92
9th Powerball only $4 1 in 38

Overall, the odds of winning any prize are approximately 1 in 24.9. That means roughly 1 out of every 25 tickets wins some amount.

Power Play Option

Power Play is an add-on that costs an extra $1 per ticket. It multiplies non-jackpot prizes by 2x to 5x (or even 10x in special cases).

Power Play Multipliers

The Power Play multiplier is determined by a separate drum before the main drawing. If you win the 2nd prize ($1,000,000) with Power Play, the prize is automatically doubled to a fixed $2,000,000 regardless of the multiplier drawn.

Power Play Example: If you win the 6th prize ($7) and the Power Play multiplier is 5x, your actual payout becomes $7 x 5 = $35.

How to Buy Tickets

Powerball tickets are available in 45 U.S. states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In-Store Purchase

You can buy tickets at authorized lottery retailers such as convenience stores, gas stations, and supermarkets. Simply fill out a play slip with your chosen numbers or ask the clerk for a Quick Pick.

Online Purchase

Some states allow online ticket purchases through their official lottery websites or apps. Additionally, authorized courier services like Jackpocket enable you to order tickets from your phone.

Buying from Abroad

Residents outside the United States can purchase Powerball tickets through authorized international lottery concierge services such as theLotter. However, always check your local laws regarding participation in foreign lotteries.

Jackpot Payout Options

If you win the Powerball jackpot, you can choose between two payout methods.

Most winners opt for the lump sum. However, the annuity option may be more advantageous from a tax perspective, so consulting a financial professional is strongly recommended.

Odds and Expected Value

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292,201,338. For comparison, the odds of winning the Korean Lotto 6/45 jackpot are about 1 in 8,145,060 -- making Powerball roughly 36 times harder to win.

However, because the Powerball jackpot rolls over when there is no winner, the prize pool accumulates over time. In theory, there is a point where the expected value turns positive when the jackpot grows large enough. Of course, this simplified calculation does not account for multiple winners, taxes, and other factors.

Responsible Play

Powerball is entertainment. The lottery is meant to be fun and provide a small thrill of hope -- it is not an investment strategy. Always play within your means and only spend what you can afford to lose.
